Saving the world doesn’t have to be a huge task for one person to take on. Every one of us has the ability to lend a helping hand to help conserve Earth, and together, we can make a huge difference. Surprisingly, oysters largely contribute to clean water because they’re a natural filter, filtering about 30 to 50 gallons of water per day. Through their eating process, oysters take harmful pollutants out of the water, making it safer for drinking. Crazy, huh? With this being said, helping our oyster populations grow is one of the best things we can do for our environment. Here are our suggestions on saving the Earth, one oyster at a time.
Stop Eating Wild Oysters
Before you get upset, you should know that Tommy’s does not serve wild oysters. In fact, because of hard hurricanes and tropical storms in the Gulf, many of the wild oyster reefs have, unfortunately, been destroyed. Tommy’s is different because we get our oysters from local oyster farms. Google oyster farms near you to get your hands on fresh gulf oysters that are not a threat to the wild population, while also helping local farmers. It’s a win-win, really!
If you’re a regular at Tommy’s, you’re already helping to recycle oyster shells! Tommy’s is very proud to join forces with the Galveston Bay Foundation as part of their oyster shell recycling program. Every oyster that is eaten at Tommy’s has its shell donated to the Galveston Bay Foundation to help build up the reefs that were destroyed during Hurricane Ike. Think of these reefs as being neighborhoods that promote ocean life to move in. To put the importance of oyster shell recycling into context, in 2011, over 250 TONS of oyster shells were recycled to form reefs instead of landing in the landfill.
Donate or Volunteer
The Galveston Bay Foundation is always welcoming to both donation and volunteers. Either one helps the foundation to preserve the Gulf for generations to come. If you’re interested in either donating or volunteering, check out their website for more information. Even if you’re not interested in donating or volunteering, participating in the Galveston Bay’s events is a great way to learn more about their mission and how you can do little things in your everyday life to help the oceans.
The oceans are vital for maintaining all life on earth. Without them, we would cease to exist. We invite you to join Tommy’s in the movement to keep oceans cleaner and healthier.
